Unification, Observation and Realism in Astroparticle Physics, palestra de Brigitte Falkenburg no âmbito do Seminário The Void and the Atom (after and beyond Bachelard).
Abstract: Astroparticle physics is a recent sub-discipline of physics that emerged from early cosmic ray studies, astrophysics, and particle physics. Its theoretical foundations range from quantum field theory to general relativity, but the underlying “standard models” of cosmology and particle physics are far from being unified. The talk explains the pragmatic strategies employed in astroparticle physics in order to unify a disunified research field, the concept of observation involved in these strategies, and their relations to scientific realism.

Atomism, Quantum Particles, and the Parts of Matter por Brigitte Falkenburg, oitava sessão do Seminário The Void and the Atom (after and beyond Bachelard).
Abstract: In 20th century physics, traditional atomism and the classical particle concept were rejected. The most striking features of quantum particles are non-locality and indeterminism, which challenge the traditional views about physical reality and which often are explained in terms of wave-particle duality. My talk discusses in which sense quantum particles still may be called “particles”. Today, there is a family of coexisting particle concepts rather than one unambiguous concept only. Most important are the field quanta of quantum fields and the quark model of the quantum parts of matter. Since classical realism fails, it is not obvious in which terms of scientific realism it may be expressed how they explain the quantum structure of matter.
