As tradições pré-cristãs do solstício de inverno foram sendo absorvidas pelo Natal no qual se passaram a inserir.
Na Galiza, o Apalpador. No país basco, o Olentzero.
Olentzero desce à povoação na noite de 24 de dezembro para deixar presentes para as crianças. Nalguns locais chega alguns dias mais tarde, por exemplo a 27 em Otsagabia e a 31 em Ermua.
De acordo com a lenda, Olentzero é descrito como um gigante basco que vive nas montanhas dos Pirenéus, um carvoeiro forte e habilidoso nos trabalhos manuais que constrói brinquedos de madeira, amigo da boa comida e bebida.
Como é costume com estas personagens, o Olentzero tem canções que lhe são dedicadas e são cantadas em grupo nos eventos (seguem dois exemplos em euskara e com a respetiva tradução para inglês).
